Suitable candidates with very high research motivation in the field of tsunami modeling are invited to attend the Walk-in-interview along with their CV and supportive certificates on 23rd November 2007 at 9:30 AM in the Department of Applied Geology, Guindy Campus (Opp: to Gandhi Mandapam), University of Madras, Chennai.
The post is a temporary position (up to March 2008) in the Ministry of Earth Sciences funded research project entitled “Establishment of National Early Warning System for Tsunami & Storm Surges in Indian Ocean” .
Selected candidates need to undertake fieldwork along coastal areas of India.
No TA/DA will be given for attending the interview.

The Oxford-Princeton Global Leaders Programme
Dear Readers,
I am involved in an exciting post-doctoral fellowship program, with Oxford, exclusively for nationals of non-OECD countries. This program is a partnership between Oxford's Center for Economic Governance, led by Ngaire Woods, and the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance, led by Helen Milner, at Princeton. We have very generous funding for up to six two-year post-doctoral fellowships a year. Fellows will spend their first year at Oxford, and their second year at Princeton. We plan to build a network of alumni, linked to our already-instituted Global Advisory Council on distinguished scholars working in developing countries.
The purpose of the program is to help increase the capacity of developing countries to negotiate on more equal terms with rich countries. We envisage our fellows returning with ideas and skills that will enable them both to train new cohorts of people with relevant expertise, and to participate in government themselves.
Candidates must either have a doctoral degree or be in the process of completing one, and they must intend to return to their own countries, or to other developing countries, for their career. We do not require a formal agreement, but in interviews we will seek to explore the depth of candidates' personal commitments to return to help their countries.
I am writing to solicit your help. Could you please take a moment to think both of potential applicants, known to you, and more senior people, especially in developing countries, who might know such potential applicants? Please feel free to forward this note and send the attached materials.

Project Positions at ATREE's Community Environment Resource Centre (CERC) at Alappuzha
ATREE seeks to hire personnel for the following positions at its Community Environment Resource Centre (CERC) at Alappuzha for its conservation program “Strengthening Communities and Institutions for Sustainable Management of Vembanad Backwaters, Kerala” This is a Multi-pronged project that aims to strengthen local capacities in governance and wise use of wetland by establishing community monitoring systems and bringing together various stakeholders to envision a sustainable management plan.

1. Program Coordinator
The applicants are expected to lead the programme and contribute to the development of ATREE's Community Environment Resource Centre (CERC) at Alappuzha. The candidate must have experience in policy analysis, and an interest in catalyzing meaningful exchange and action among various stakeholder groups and institutions in the project area including government and non-government institutions. The work includes critically analysing policies with respect to the wetlands systems with a special reference to the Vembanad Backwaters and developing management models.
Qualifications: Applicants are expected to have a doctorate in Social Sciences/Environmental law, though candidates with a Masters degree and substantial professional experience will also be considered.
2. Program officer (Water Watch)
The applicants are expected to develop a proper scientific and planned strategy for regular monitoring of the water quality of Vembanad Lake with the participation of local communities and Local Self Government Institutions. The candidates are also expected to assist in developing the Wetland Conservation Information System.
Qualifications: A Masters degree in any branch of Natural Science with a sound knowledge in quantitative and qualitative research methods. Candidates with experience on working with rural communities would be preferable.
The candidates must have effective interpersonal skills and ability to work independently. The persons should be willing to work in tough field conditions, if the project demands. Candidates should possess good writing and communication skills and knowledge Malayalam will be beneficial

Narendra Babu Ecological Research Initiative Grant
The Narendra Babu Ecological Research Initiative Grant (NBERIG) is a small grant designed to encourage young wildlife biologists and conservationists by supporting field-based projects that have a clear scientific or conservation agenda. We aim to support research studies that will add to the current scientific knowledge of species or habitats as well as projects that will offer and execute conservation solutions based on existing scientific knowledge. The grant is administered by the Ecology, Behaviour and Conservation Group of the National Institute of Advanced Studies.
Important dates : 15th July 2007 is the last date for the receipt of completed proposals. The results will be announced by the last week of August. Funds will be made available to the successful grantee by the first week of September.
Scope of the grant
The grant will support scientific wildlife research as well as research based wildlife conservation and outreach activities in India.
The grant money for research will not exceed Rs.50,000 per year and will give a preference to proposals on wild dogs.

Submissions are being accepted for the 2007 round of the Global Development Awards and Medals Competition, which carries prizes in cash and travel of over US $180,000!
Submissions can be for a new research proposal or for a completed research paper on any of the five themes below:
1. Fragile States: Addressing Vulnerability
2. Household Exposure to Risk: Effects on Poverty
3. The Rule of Law: Providing Security for Development
4. Women's Rights, Security and Development: Challenges and Opportunities
5. Natural Resources: Risks and Implications for Sustaining Development
The deadline is September 17, 2007.
Under each theme, GDN welcomes submissions from all branches of the social sciences (Economics, Political Science, Sociology etc), especially multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary projects.
Submissions from qualified female researchers are particularly encouraged.
The finalists will present their papers and proposals at GDN's Annual Global Development Conference in Brisbane, Australia in January 2008.
